Methodology questions

How a score was derived, or why two tools disagree. Our editorial standards page covers most of it.

Before you write

A few things that come up often:

  • Our numbers are estimates, not benchmarks. If a figure differs from a review that actually ran the game, the review is the better source — see how we calculate.
  • Scores are relative and get recalibrated. A card's number can drop when a new flagship launches without its real performance changing.
  • We do not test hardware ourselves. We aggregate published data, so we cannot answer questions about individual sample variance or overclocking headroom.
